Cooking for Isaac, July 4 weekend

Saturday I strapped Isaac into the car at 6am, half an hour after he’d woken up, and we slipped off to the Coop to do the weekly shopping while Shannon slept in. He was drowsy on the way out, murmuring gently to himself while I stayed as quiet as possible, but he perked up when I put him in the sling for the shopping. By the time we were in line to pay he was chatty and grabby, kicking his legs when strangers smiled at him and reaching for buttons on the ATM card reader when I went to pay. So I knew he’d be wide awake for the drive home, which usually means he starts screaming when I put the car into drive and stops when he sees Shannon. But this time I gave him a grabby cup full of cereal and, miraculously, he was quiet the whole ride. I only discovered the price of that quiet when we got home, which was a backseat, car seat, and baby completely covered in kamut puffs. They were still falling out of his onesie an hour later. Still, I’d do it again.

We also went with him to M. Wells diner later that day, where he ate everything we gave him.

Sunday morning marked the first time I was successfully able to cook something more complex than scrambled eggs while hanging out with Isaac. I propped him in his high char and occasionally threw pieces of food at him while I put together a batch of yogurt cinnamon walnut muffins. It wasn’t a complete triumph. I’d meant to use a cup and a half of white flour and half a cup of whole wheat, but I was distracted enough that I completely forgot the whole wheat flour. Amazingly, the muffins came out fine anyway - lighter and angels-food cakey, but pretty good. He liked them.

Monday I forget. Leftover merguez and couscous, I think. And throughout the weekend, regular supplements of banana and the strawberry-cottage cheese combo alluded to earlier. He won’t eat the strawberries if we put them on a spoon, but if we put them in front of him and let him squish them around a little bit he gobbles them right up.
